A name is selected for baseball team

Cooperstown’s minor league baseball team has a name — Hawkeyes.

Team owner Tom Hickey, of Fly Creek, said Tuesday afternoon that the name was selected from more than 60 entries — some coming from as far away as Austin, Texas and Dearborn, Mich.

Hickey said the winning entry was submitted by Cooperstown resident David Pearlman. Other people made the same suggestion, but Pearlman’s submission was received first.

Hickey said he was looking for something that was consistent with the history of Cooperstown and also would lend itself to the creation of a team logo and mascot.

The most popular entry was the Mohicans. Hickey said he was encouraged by the response from the public and is looking forward to the team’s first season next summer.
