Winter Carnival plans are set

The 2010 Wild Wild Winter Carnival will be held Feb. 5 through 7 in Cooperstown.

The event will feature a western theme, the Carnival Committee announced recently.

The eighth annual Carnival Fireworks display will start Winter Carnival weekend off with a boom at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5. Bundle up and head to Lake Front Park for this popular community event that brings fireworks and a parade to the Cooperstown winter.

The annual parade will then step off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, beginning from the intersection of Main Street and Railroad Avenue, making its way down Main Street, and ending in Cooper Park.

``The parade is a way for the whole family to get out and have some fun despite the cold weather,’’ said committee member Mike DeSimone.

In sync with Winter Carnival’s Wild West theme, the parade will be dubbed the ``Carnival Corral.’’ All community organizations, businesses and local residents are encouraged to join the parade.

Entries can include marchers, bands, floats, boats, bikes, trikes, cars, trucks and other vehicles, or pretty much anything you can think of. A western theme for each unit is encouraged. In addition, all past Carnival chairpersons are invited to ride in the parade on an antique fire truck.

Report to the corner of Main and Railroad at 10:15 a.m. the day of the parade.

The parade will be judged, with prizes including $125 for first place, $75 for second, and $50 for third.

Anyone interested in entering or sponsoring the parade can contact Whitney Selover at (607) 267-9935 or email the committee at c ooperstownwintercarnival @gmail.com.

``The parade is an excellent way to support a great community event while bringing exposure to your business at the same time,’’ Selover said.

Committee members include, Whitney Selover, Co- Chair; Tina Macaluso, Co- Chair; Scott Barton; Geoff Bell; Sam Carr; Mike DeSimone; Patti Gulotta; George Macaluso, Kris Potrikus; Sarah Purdy; Bill Weldon; and Kim White.
