At the end of June, Father Sam Abbott
will retire after almost 30 years in parish
ministry.
His last Sunday services at Christ
Episcopal Church will be on June 28 at 8
a.m. and 10 a.m.
At 5 p.m. that evening, Christ Church
will host a ``Community Concert’’ to honor
the rich ministries of Father Sam and his
wife and partner, Edith. It will feature the
musical talents of organist Roberta Rowland-
Raybold, the Christ Church Choir and Praise Band,
Yolanda Sharpe, Mike Luby, Katie Boardman and Ah
Coopella. Following the concert, there will be a reception
in the Parish Hall. The community is invited to attend.
Father Sam graduated from Harvard University and
then served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nigeria. After
his return, he earned law degrees from UC-Berkeley and
Yale University and worked as an attorney and professor
of law.
Responding to his call to the priesthood, Father Sam
read for orders in the Episcopal Church and was ordained
a deacon in 1980 and a priest a year later. He served parishes
in New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut and
has been the rector of Christ Church in Cooperstown for
the past five years.
The heart of Father Sam’s ministry in Cooperstown
has been teaching, through his preaching, adult education
classes and children’s sermons. He is also a skilled
administrator and leads with humor, grace, intellect and
the convictions of his deep-seated faith.
In the community, Father Sam has been an active
member of the Rotary Club. He has also been an advocate
for Christian youth activities, first through the Cooperstown
Ecumenical Youth Group and currently with Youth
For Christ.
The concert and reception in celebration of the ministries
of Father Sam and Edith will begin at 5 p.m. on Sunday,
June 28.
All are welcome to attend.
