Fly Creek Philharmonic prepares for show

On Friday and Saturday, March 19 and 20, the Fly Creek Philharmonic will again swing into action with their latest creation, ``Tune That Name.’’ The show will center around musical pieces relating to people’s names.

``As usual,’’ said creative director Paula Schaeffer, ``half the problem is narrowing our focus down. This year we’ve got everything from Lydia, the Tattooed Lady to our own strange rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus.’’

Members of the Philharmonic range wildly in age and occupation, but they all come together for a few months of intense rehearsals.

``It gets us all through the winter,’’ says Schaeffer. ``By the time the show goes on, spring is at least in sight,’’ adds Schaeffer. This year the group has voted to donate a portion of their ticket sales to the Fly Creek Methodist Church.

The Philharmonic is not directly connected to the church but the building serves as home base for the group.

As cast member Dr. Chris Kjolhede puts it, ``once a year the church is transformed into Philharmonic Hall.’’

The donation to the Methodist church helps support the repainting of the building.

The church took on the project as part of its 175th anniversary celebration.

Tickets for the performance can be purchased at Augur’s in Cooperstown and the Fly Creek General Store.

Performances start at 8 p.m. in the Fly Creek Methodist Church.
