Hartwick’s Pine Lake to host garden writer

On Saturday, March 6, Hartwick Colleges Pine Lake Institute for Environmental and Sustainability Studies will host gardener and writer Fern Bradley, who will give a talk titled ``Planting: Possibilities and Perils.’’

The talk, part of the ``Conversations at the Lake’’ series, will be held at 1 p.m. in the Strawbale House at Hartwick’s Pine Lake Environmental Campus.

It is free and open to the public.

According to Bradley, ``Step one in creating a successful garden is building good soil, but it’s step two _ planting _ that transforms fertile soil into a gardening adventure. While the act of planting a seed is simple, there are many possibilities to consider when you’re contemplating planting an entire vegetable garden, large or small.’’

Bradley is the author of ``Rodale’s Vegetable Garden Problem Solver’’ (2007) and the co-author of ``Vegetable Gardening’’ (2006). She also edits the quarterly newsletter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York.

In addition, while working at Rodale Garden Books in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, Bradley was part of an editorial team that produced many classic garden books.

Bradley has degrees in plant science and horticulture from Cornell and Rutgers Universities, and honed her organic gardening skills while managing a two-acre market garden in western New Jersey. While living in Emmaus, she transformed a site former commercial brickyard site into productive and beautiful beds of vegetables, perennials, and herbs.

This event is sponsored by the Pine Lake Institute for Environmental and Sustainability Studies at Hartwick College. Conversations at the Lake, begun in 2006, is a series of informal talks on subjects relating to sustainability and the environment.
