COMMENTING ON STORIES:

Welcome to our story comments feature. We welcome your thoughts and your opinions, including the unpopular ones. We only ask that you keep your conversations clean, civil and on the topic of the story you are commenting on.

Coinciding with our websites redesign, we launched our new story comments feature through Disqus.

For the time being, our story comments feature will continue to have the ability to post comments anonymously. We reserve the right to require registration in the future using your name and verified email address.

Not all comments are deemed printable. Some are disqualified at the newspaper’s discretion for a number of different reasons. Please follow our Online Rules of Conduct at all times.

We reserve the right to remove comments that are unacceptable, to wit:

3. Harassing, harmful, vulgar, obscene and defamatory language.
4. Threatening statements or statements that suggest violence.
5. Hate speech of any kind.
6. Intolerant comments on religion, race, age, gender, sexual preference or disabilities.
7. Accusations of criminal activity.
8. Content that is harmful to children and minors in any way.
9. References to any type of sexual activity and other private matters.
10. Random and inflammatory statements that are off topic.
11. Advertising of any kind.
12. Typing in all caps.

WE ENCOURAGE REASONABLE AND COURTEOUS COMMENTS THAT:

1. Create conversation on issues of interest and concern to fellow readers and local community members.
2. Express opinions and contrarian views.
3. Stimulate debate with respectful language.
4. Stay within the boundaries of these rules.

1. Violating any of these Online Rules of Conduct.

Let’s thank our mayor

and village board

Kudos to Mayor Jeff Katz and the board of trustees for revisiting the possibility of using paid parking to raise the funds necessary to keep our village streets in good condition. I was on the board of trustees when the idea of paid parking was first introduced and it was met with contentious opposition.

Let’s hope that the intervening years and a new board can soften the opposition to paid parking and show the wisdom of using this means of raising the necessary funds.

I also commend the board for taking up the cause of villagers who have to adhere to the two-hour parking law in front of their own homes. This has always been a bone of contention with me and over the 56 years that I have lived in my house, I have had to pay innumerable tickets for not moving my car in time. Each time I paid the ticket, I have grumbled and stated that I would be happy to pay for a permit giving me the privilege of parking in front of my own home. And now the mayor and the board of trustees have come up with a plan to do just that.

I sincerely hope they are successful in both ventures and thank them for their time and effort in addressing these and all the other problems involved in keeping Cooperstown up and running. The average citizen of our village has no idea of how much time and effort this involves. Having “been there, done that, I know what it means.

If you meet up with Jeff Katz or any member of our board of trustees, take the time to give him/her a handshake and a big thank you for all that they do for us. It would be nice to get some positive feedback amongst all of the negatives that they usually hear.

Our Readers' Opinions Regarding the April 4 letter from Margaret McGown et al, I understand why the letter's authors are disappointed with the decision of Otsego Land Trust to discontinue renting private dock space. All concerned should understand that we did not take any actions without careful consideration and ultimate approval by our Board of Directors.

Our Readers' Opinions: Dec. 20, 2012 The Cooperstown Friends of Football Committee would like to thank everyone that helped support us in 2012. Your generous contributions at the Hartwick Breakfast and other fundraisers allowed us to provide the players, cheerleaders and coaches with individual and team photos and buttons, bag lunches for away games, a homecoming game under the lights, awards banquet, modified pizza party, team gifts, and team video.
