In These Otsego Hills: The 2011 Cooperstown Carol

Since 1984, with the exception of one year, 1999, we have looked forward at the end of the year to going through all the issues of the paper in order to glean those news items which have been worthy of note throughout the year and which should make their way into our annual Cooperstown Carol.

However, this year we could not bring ourselves to make that journey through the papers. We did not like most of what transpired this year and we had no reason to wish to revisit it, let alone work it into a carol. Thus we have chosen not to do so.

Therefore, we must admit that our initial reaction was to simply pass on a Cooperstown Carol for this year. It was most definitely not the decision we wanted to make.

Yet we did not know what else we might do instead when suddenly, as we were humming “Silver Bells,” it came to us that although we did not want to review specific news of the year, we did feel it might be appropriate to write generally about our reaction to this year.

And thus, with apologies

to “Silver Bells,” we offer

“Someone Yells”...

On the stage tempers

rage

At meetings publicly held.

Everywhere

There’s a feeling of division.

There’s no telling

People yelling With frown after frown.

And on ev’ry street corner you’ll hear...

This opinion, that opinion; Do it my way in the city. It goes on with no peace around Even on Christmas Day.

Those with ideas bright Believe that they’re right Planting signs in the yard, As the people long ever for agreement.

Hear the snow crunch.

See the kids bunch

Thinking of naught but goodwill.

Yet above all the hopes you’ll hear...

This opinion, that opinion;

Do it my way in the city.

It goes on with no peace around

Even on Christmas Day.

Merry Christmas and  Happy New Year.
