We welcomed Linda Keller, Ph.D. of the Bassett Research Institute and Ida Baker of NYCAMH who presented a six-week workshop for residents and staff.
The Living Healthy New York Community Workshop was developed based on research at Stanford and was made available to us by the Center for Excellence in Aging & Community Wellness at the University of Albany. The program provides education and strategies for Self-Management of Chronic Diseases.
Participants set weekly goals and supported each other to reach their goals successfully.
The program may be offered again in the future to allow local area residents an opportunity to participate.
We thank Linda, Ida and Linda Borowsky of the University of Albany for allowing us to take advantage of the program.
The winter weather has been unusually sunny and warm, which allowed us to take some outdoor walks and enjoy the view of the green grass. We even appreciated the inch or two of snow when it gently blanketed the hillsides.
We’ve learned to play some new games, including bottle pool, thanks to Leon Rathbun and Ralph Veenema who researched the rules, set up the added equipment and scoring system, and taught some of us how to play. Margaret Rees’ family gave a Wii game to the home, and Facility Manager Frank Miller taught us how to team up to win Family Feud. We have some other sports games to learn yet, but we are having lots of fun.
The reading group has continued to enjoy biographies of comedians, George Burns and Betty White and will soon move on to Mary Tyler Moore. We celebrated January birthdays including Margaret Rees and Nancy Rackmyer. Frank Miller’s son, Lucas also had a birthday and is now learning to drive. What a milestone.

While I'm still devoted to actual books, I must admit that traveling with a thin, lightweight computerized device beats dragging along one or two bulky hard copy titles.
