The National Baseball Hall of Fame will pay homage to baseball’s legendary stars, unveil exhibits and create a lifetime of memories with family-friendly events in 2011, Hall officials said in a media release.
According to organizers, the action gets under way this month and will continue throughout the year as the museum celebrates the National Pastime. As always, the museum’s calendar is highlighted by the annual Induction Weekend, which will feature the enshrinement of Roberto Alomar, Bert Blyleven and Pat Gillick as the Class of 2011, July 22-25.
The 2011 public programs calendar at the Hall of Fame includes:
• A Celebration of Black History Month, Feb. 21-25: The Hall of Fame will host a week’s worth of programs celebrating Black History Month. Programs will feature Artifact Spotlights, films that feature the stories of Negro leagues legends and a walkthrough of the Museum’s Pride and Passion exhibit with a Hall of Fame curator.
• Women in Baseball Day, March 19: In honor of Women’s History Month, the Museum will present programs highlighting the accomplishments of women in the National Pastime, including an Author’s Series program with Martha Ackmann, author of “Curveball: The Remarkable Story of Toni Stone, the First Woman to Play Professional Baseball in the Negro League”; anArtifact Spotlight on women in baseball; and a special screening of oral history interviews conducted with members of the All- American Girls Professional Baseball League.
• Opening Day, March 31: Welcome the return of Baseball at the Hall of Fame with televised live games from the major leagues throughout the afternoon as well as fun trivia contests between innings.
• Family Day, April 2: The Hall of Fame kicks off the season with live music, hands-on activities and demonstrations throughout the museum all day long.
The first 500 visitors receive a numbered family day butto,n which will make them eligible for prizes and giveaways that we will announce throughout the day, including the chance to win tickets to the 2011 Hall of Fame Classic.
• Youth Baseball Week, April 18-23: Celebrate spring break at the Hall of Fame with interactive programs such as Connect with Louisville Slugger, which features a virtual tour of the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory; Jackie: Cross the Line!, which tells the story of Jackie Robinson’s life through actor Gregory Gibson Kenney; Roberto: Chat with an Angel, a portrayal of Clemente by Gregory Gibson Kenney; and Effa Manley and Her Scrapbook, a program about the first woman inducted into the Hall of Fame presented by noted children’s author Audrey Vernick.
• Salute to the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, May 7-8: Programs and events dedicated to the 2010 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, including display of the Giants’ World Series trophy in the Hall of Fame’s Education Gallery.
• “One for the Books’’ Exhibit Opening, May 27-28: Visit the Hall of Fame as it opens an exhibit that looks at the history of baseball records, and the stories behind them. Members are invited to a preview and reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, the Museum will celebrate the official opening of the exhibit with programs all day long.
• Cricket Weekend, June 3-5: An Interactive weekend celebrating the newest museum exhibit on the relationship between cricket and baseball, Swinging Away, direct from the Marylebone Cricket Club in London.
• Hall of Fame Classic Weekend, June 18-19: Seven Hall of Famers and 20 other former major league players take to Doubleday Field for a game of legendary stars in this annual Father’s Day Weekend event.
The Weekend will feature family-friendly events and a golf fundraiser for the museum. Tickets go on sale April 16 at www.baseballhall. org.
• All-Star Gala, July 12: The Hall of Fame will host the annual All-Star Game Gala. The night will include games, prizes, food, entertainment, and, live coverage of the 2011 All-Star Game from Chase Field in Phoenix, Ariz. Members may reserve tickets beginning Monday, June 6, and any remaining tickets will be available to non-members on Tuesday, July 5 by calling the membership department at 547-0397.
• Hall of Fame Weekend, July 22-25: The spotlight of the baseball world will shine on Cooperstown as Roberto Alomar, Bert Blyleven and Pat Gillick are enshrined as the Class of 2011.
The weekend features family-friendly events such as Saturday’s Awards Ceremony and Parade of Legends, Sunday’s 1:30 p.m. Induction Ceremony and Monday’s Voices of the Game event with the members of the Class of 2011.
• Baseball Film Festival, Sept. 30-Oct. 2: The annual Festival is a showcase of newly released films of any genre with a baseball focus. Tickets for each screening session are free but must be reserved.
Participants in the Hall of Fame’s Membership Program may begin reserving their tickets on Monday, Sept. 12, by calling 547-0397. Any remaining tickets will be available to the general public beginning on Monday, Sept. 26.
• Character and Courage Weekend, Oct. 7-9: Held during Columbus Day Weekend, this thematic celebration of two traits found in the Hall of Fame spirit provides programs that document sportsmanship, character and integrity.
• The Haunted Side of Baseball, Oct. 15, 22 and 29: Visitors to the Hall of Fame on Saturdays in October can experience the mysterious side of our National Pastime through an hour-long tour exploring the ghosts, curses and legends of baseball’s past and present.
Learn about the Curse of the Bambino, the hauntings at Wrigley Field, and even some strange occurrences at the Hall of Fame itself. The “Ghosts of Baseball’’ tour will be offered at 11 a.m. each Saturday beginning Oct. 15 and running through Oct. 29.
• World Series Gala, Late October (date TBD): Enjoy the excitement of the Fall Classic on the big screen at the Hall of Fame in one of the favorite annual family events.
The evening will include refreshments, trivia, raffles, prizes and, of course, live coverage of a to-be-determined game of the 2011 World Series.
